The Union representing workers at Luton's Vauxhall plant say the decision to close it is a "betrayal" and "total disgrace".

The closure, which was announced by Vauxhall’s owner Stellantis late last year, is expected to result in significant job losses and economic disruption. As one of Luton’s largest employers, the plant has played a major role in the local economy, supporting not only its own workforce but also supply chain businesses and local services.

Yesterday, Luton Council spoke of their anger at the closure, describing the move as "heartbreaking". They've also announced they're looking at acquiring the site, to ensure it will in future benefit the local economy.

Stellantis released a statement to say they will continue to support the staff impacted, including through wellness sessions, and relocation support for those who wish to transition to Ellesmere Port.

Now, Unite, who represent workers, say the decision is a disgrace.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:

“Stellantis’ betrayal of its Luton workforce, who have delivered every target asked of them, is a total disgrace.

"Once again, UK workers have been exposed to a company willing to sacrifice our manufacturing base for fleeting gains - this has to change.

"We urgently need an industrial strategy that puts the national interest at the heart of decision making in manufacturing, as they do in other countries.”
