Ukrainian community member in Hertfordshire shares concern over global response to war
A long-term UK resident from Ukraine has spoken about the resilience of Ukrainians and the need for continued international support
A Ukrainian community member in Hertfordshire has highlighted concerns about the ongoing war and the global response to recent developments.
Elena, who has lived in the UK for over a decade, emphasised the importance of support from Western countries and warned of potential consequences if action is not taken.
Over the last week, international discussions surrounding a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine have intensified, but uncertainty remains over how it will impact those on the ground. The possibility of a temporary truce has sparked mixed reactions within the Ukrainian community in the UK, with some hopeful for de-escalation while others fear it may only serve to benefit Russia.
"We are all trying to stay resilient and positive, but we still hope that Western countries, especially in Europe, will continue to support us," Elena said. "We see that support now, and world leaders are trying to find solutions, but this situation remains very dangerous."
Reflecting on recent meetings between world leaders, she expressed disappointment at what she saw as diminishing support for Ukraine. "We have had good relations with the United States since our independence in 1991. It is not just about support; it is about respect and friendship. This is about peace across the world," she said.
Elena also voiced concerns about Russia’s long-term intentions. "We know a little about Russian mentality, having been part of the Soviet Union. Putin will not stop unless he is forced to stop. He only understands power," she said. "Any agreements or promises made will not change that."
Speaking about the Ukrainian community in the UK, she acknowledged the challenges faced by refugees who fled the war. "There are women here alone with children, trying to find jobs while also supporting their families. Many struggle with the language barrier," she explained. "Despite these challenges, Ukrainians are resilient and determined to rebuild their lives."
One of the biggest concerns, she said, is uncertainty over their future in the UK. "Visas have been extended for 18 months, but people are unsure what will happen next. It is difficult to settle when you don’t know if you will be allowed to stay," she said.
Elena also warned that failing to stop the war in Ukraine could have wider consequences. "If Ukraine does not receive enough support to defend itself, the war could reach Europe. This is not just about Ukraine – this is about stability for everyone," she said.
She stressed the need for world leaders to consider more than just military outcomes. "Ceasefire is one thing, but what about safety? What about human rights and freedom?" she asked. "People need to understand that peace on paper does not mean peace in reality."
Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful. "The UK and Europe have been supportive, and we are grateful. We just hope that support continues," she said.
