Two bodies have been recovered from the River Great Ouse near Kempston, after reports of canoeists being in difficulty in the water over the weekend.

Bedfordshire Police confirmed through their Facebook page that they received calls at around 10:50am yesterday (April 16) of two capsized canoes and a possible female in difficulties.

Officers were joined by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Teams and the EEAST Ambulance Service at the Weir embankment in Water Lane, Kempston, and sadly recovered two bodies.

The Bedfordshire Coroner made aware, and no formal identification has been made yet.

A police presence will remain in the area as Police continue their investigations and members of the public are asked to avoid the Weir embankment and Water Lane area, while officers carry out further enquiries.

A spokesperson for the force has said their thoughts are with those affected by these tragic circumstances.
