As of 4am this morning (7 December), travellers arriving back into the UK will need proof of a negative PCR or lateral flow COVID-19 test.

The test must be taken two days before the return flight back to England and if the journey to England is a multi-leg journey, then test must again be taken two days before the first leg, according to the government website.

Jim Kerr, a father from Hertfordshire, had plans to take his family abroad this Christmas to soak up some sun.

However, as the government's new restrictions are put into place Mr Kerr has cancelled.

He told Greatest Hits Radio:

"With this additional PCR it's additional cost, and then there's always that chance that one of you may show as being positive.

"And then what do you do?

"It just didn't seem like a risk worth taking.

"And with the our sons you know having to come back to go to university, and some of them going out, celebrating New Year with friends.

"You know it's just a risk not worth taking."

Off Broadway, a private travel agent based in Welwyn, have reportedly been inundated with calls from customers all trying to sort out holidays booked and some even trying to figure out how to get back for Christmas.

"I feel sorry for everybody involved in the industry"

Mr Kerr also said that the disruption to the travel industry has had a knock on affect:

"Any transport that you have booked to get you to the airport and any travel insurance, cancel that.

"So there's all these additional things that you have to cancel so it's had a knock on effect to all these different businesses.

"I feel sorry for everybody involved in the industry."
