Thames Valley Police is launching a new diploma to welcome people who have a degree to join the force a as a detective.

They want to recruit people who are driven by their communities and have a passion for becoming a detective.

The mission is also to welcome applicants at all stages; from those who have just graduated to those looking to change direction in their careers or pursue work in the police force.

The reason why they are looking for degree-holders is to raise the educational standard of entry to focus on how their profession to be: "stronger, more diversified and more skilful" according to Head of Crime Ian Hunter at Thames Valley Police.

Prioritising diversity

Mr Hunter said they will be focusing on encouraging people from a range of backgrounds to join the force in hopes of diversifying their team even more. He said:

"We've had a great intake in relation to female candidates. We really want to look at communities that are underrepresented as well; so particularly our Black, Asian and Minority ethnic groups."

"The Policing has always been having and developing the best people we can to serve the community."

Detective Sergeant Lara Pinder has worked as a Police officer 18 years and has said she wants to continue seeing a rise in female applicants entering the force. She stated:

"I've seen a real rise in female colleagues. When I first went to meet my response team I was probably one of 5 female officers; that's hugely changed now when you walk into the operations room when officers are briefing, and that can only be a positive step."

Ms Pinder also noted several factors which make the ideal candidate. She said:

"Communication is key, professional curiosity and a general interest in what's going on in someone's life and what you can do it improve that situation. Being adaptable, resilient and being able to meet your audience essentially will make someone successful in the role."

Student Detective currently on the Detective-DHEP course, Michael Hopcroft said that there are a number of things that have surprised him since starting his course but that it had been an enjoyable experience. He noted:

"Thames Valley Police is an incredibly supportive police force as a whole. We've got a wide array of people, talent and as well as that it's not like you can't not have that work-life balance. You just need to talk to your sergeant or inspector and you can get support." He added:

"It's all about your mental health and wellbeing, and I think Thames Valley has a really good grip on that."
