Thursdays local election saw residents vote in the Thames Valley.

Matthew Barber has been elected the Thames Valley's new Police and Crime Commissioner after Thursdays election.

The Conservative candidate received 313,148 votes, Laetisia Carter the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate came second with 233,446 votes.

A post on the Thames Valley PCC website explains that Barber, who has been serving as Deputy PCC for the last four years has developed a clear plan to be tough on crime.

With the goal of ensuring safe communities the plan includes:

  • Strong local policing - more police officers, strengthening neighbourhood policing and focussing on the crimes that matter most to residents
  • Fighting serious organised crime - cracking down on the threat from “county-lines” drugs gangs to protect children from abuse and exploitation
  • Dealing with cyber crime and fraud - investing in the technology and resources the police need to protect individuals online
  • Improving criminal justice - supporting victims of crime, bringing more criminals to justice and reducing reoffending
  • Tackling illegal encampments - ensuring a fair but firm response to illegal encampments and reducing the effect on communities

Following the election results, Matthew Barber said:

“I am delighted to have been elected as the next Police and Crime Commissioner for the Thames Valley. I would also like to offer my thanks to Thames Valley residents for coming out and supporting my campaign, especially with the current COVID-19 restrictions in place.

“I plan to hit the ground running and deliver on my campaign promises.

“I look forward to taking office as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley on Thursday (13 May) and starting work on my key priorities for the region.”

Meanwhile, in Hertfordshire the Conservative and Unionist Party candidate David Lloyd has been re-elected and Bedfordshire has a new PCC in Festus Akinbusoye also a Conservative and Unionist party candidate.
