Police have charged two men with the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer in connection with a robbery and machete attack in Luton town centre. The incident occurred on Saturday, 2 November, at approximately 1pm outside Luton Point shopping centre on George Street.

Hannan Mahmood, 19, and Humar Mahmood, 18, both of Belmont Road, Luton, were arrested on Friday, 8 November. In addition to attempted murder, both men face charges of wounding with intent, possession of a bladed article in a public place, robbery, and dangerous driving.

Following their appearance at Luton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 9 November, the suspects were remanded in custody ahead of a future hearing at Luton Crown Court.

Temporary Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic praised the off-duty officer’s actions during the incident, saying, “The courage of the off-duty officer is to be commended as, in putting himself in harm’s way, he undoubtedly helped to prevent any further harm to the public. Wanton violence of this level is utterly appalling and has no place on the streets of our county.”

He added, “Thankfully, the officer is expected to make a full recovery, though this story could have been very different. I speak on behalf of the force and wider public in thanking him for his bravery and selflessness in the line of duty. His actions were nothing short of heroic.”

Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard also acknowledged the officer's bravery, stating, “The officer was ready to step into danger to protect others.” He expressed his gratitude and wished the officer a quick recovery.

Anyone with information or footage related to the incident is encouraged to contact police on 101 or report online via the Bedfordshire Police website, quoting Operation Schubert.
