A teenage boy has been found guilty of manslaughter after a stabbing in Hatfield.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found not guilty of murder by a jury on Friday (17 October 2025) but convicted of manslaughter following a month-long trial at St Albans Crown Court.

At 1.11pm on Sunday 23 March this year, police were called following reports of an altercation involving two males at the disused bus station off Parkhouse Court and Jetliner Way.

A man aged in his 20s sustained stab wounds and sadly died at the scene.

Following police enquiries, which included CCTV trawls and witness statements, a teenager was arrested at a London hospital in the early hours of Tuesday 25 March.

The teenager, who was aged 16 at the time of the offence, denied murder but pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article. He will be sentenced on Thursday 18 December.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “My thoughts remain with the victim’s family at this difficult time, and they have been supported by our officers as they try to come to terms with their loss.

“They have had to sit and relive every detail as it was heard in court, and they have shown great strength and dignity throughout the trial.

“The offender has taken no responsibility for his actions, and we now await sentencing.”

Welwyn Hatfield Chief Inspector Pete Frost added: “This incident, which happened in broad daylight, had a huge impact on the local Hatfield community.

“I would like to thank the BCH Major Crime Unit for their work in bringing the offender to justice.

“This verdict comes at an important time as we host the Knife Angel in neighbouring Welwyn Garden City. Throughout the month we are carrying out a programme of anti-violence youth engagement as well as carrying out operational work, including knife sweeps and warrants.”
