A 17-year-old boy has been convicted of the murder of a 19-year-old who was stabbed to death in Luton in April.

19-year-old Derrick Kinyua was found after he was stabbed, collapsed at the junction of Hucklesby Way, Hitchin Road and Crescent Road, and taken to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after.

Yesterday (Monday November 6), a 17-year-old boy was found guilty of murder for his role in the stabbing.

Sentencing is due to take place later this month.

An investigation into the death of Mr Kinyua was launched by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, which found that four people confronted Mr Kinyua outside where he was staying in Crescent Road, where he was stabbed, and then the teenager made his way to the main road before collapsing.

CCTV shows the 17-year-old now convicted, and another person, carrying large knives and inflicting stab wounds on Mr Kinyua.

Police believe the other attacker fled the country just hours after the teenager was fatally stabbed.

The two others in the area of the scene, 23-year-old Malcom Mangawa, of Verde Close, Luton, and 20-year-old Shakeel Morton, of Upwell Road, Luton, were found not guilty of murder at Luton Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Iain MacPherson, of the Bedfordshire Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, who led the investigation, said: “This was an incredibly violent, calculated, and abhorrent crime, which has not only seen a young man lose his life, but left another teenager facing life behind bars.

“The incident that led to Mr Kinyua’s death affected the local community and partner agencies in many ways.

“Knife crime remains an area of concern and priority across the country, but more locally we have all too recently seen mindless violence claim another young life in Luton.

“I am pleased that our investigation has resulted in a conviction and hope this serves as a warning and reiteration of our zero-tolerance towards knife crime and violence of any kind.”
