Second person dies after Cleat Hill house explosion in Bedford
Julia Harris, 84, died in hospital 10 days after the blast - an investigation into the cause and who should be held accountable continues

A second person has died following an explosion and fire in Bedford. The incident occurred on Saturday, 19 October, when emergency services were alerted shortly after 7:30 am to reports of a house on fire in Cleat Hill.
Julia Harris, 84, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident, was taken to hospital and passed away on Tuesday, 29 October. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Inwood from Bedfordshire Police commented, “Our thoughts remain with Julia’s loved ones at this difficult and distressing time. Our family liaison officers are working with family and friends and will continue to support them however we can.”
Authorities, including the Health and Safety Executive, are conducting a detailed investigation alongside the Coroner’s Office to determine the cause and accountability for the explosion. Bedford Borough Council has continued to offer support services to residents affected by the event.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton, also extended his sympathies, stating, “On behalf of Bedford Borough, I extend my deepest condolences to all who know and love the family affected by this heart-breaking tragedy.”
