30,000 object to rabbit farm planned for Buckinghamshire
There are worries about them being used for the fur industry
A new 'free-range' rabbit farm near Amersham could lead to fur being sold on as a 'by-product'.
That's from PETA - the animal rights group - who have nearly 30,000 backers on their petition against the proposals.
They say that the site, at Coleshill, could see 250 female rabbits producing around 10,000 young a year for the meat and fur industries.
Their petition lists a number of objections, including proposals being unclear on how the bodies of rabbits would be disposed of.
The company - T&S Rabbits - have been approached for comment.
Elisa Allen, Director of PETA in the UK said:
"Hawking rabbit fur is just one way to squeeze more money out of these gentle individuals, marketing everything from their feet for gimmick keyrings to their flesh for food.
"It's up to consumers to close the loophole in the UK fur-farming ban by refusing to buy into the slaughter or buy any part of animals' bodies.
"PETA reminds the public that this is a consumer issue and every one of us has the power to perpetuate the situation or effect positive change. Kind consumer choices - about what we eat and wear - are what animals need from us."
