Calls for width restrictions to stop heavy goods vehicles using a village road as a ‘rat run’ have sounded in Bucks.

Petitioners are demanding Buckinghamshire Council introduce measures to prevent HGVs using Nags Head Lane in Great Missenden “as a shortcut to larger areas”.

It is understood the measures would ideally be brought in close to where Nags Head Lane meets Windsor Lane.

Campaigners are keen to protect children, walkers and other road users while also cutting down on noise.

They say they are especially keen protect youngsters on route to and from school and those riding their bicycles in the street.

They describe Nags Head Lane as a “residential safe place”, arguing it should not be used as a shortcut.

To prevent this, they have suggested width restrictions at just one end so access for any essential ‘works and deliveries’ can still be completed in the future.

“We the undersigned petition the council to implement width restrictions at the bridge end of Nags Head Lane in Great Missenden, to prevent large lorries from using the road as a shortcut to larger areas,” they wrote.

“It is causing a huge amount of noise and making the road a less and less safe place to walk down.

“Many parts of the road are barely big enough to let two small vehicles pass each other, let alone a huge lorry with tonnes of goods.”

They added:

“The road should not be used as a shortcut as it is a residential safe place. We believe the width restrictions should only be implemented at one end so that in the event of a house being constructed or major building works or deliveries be completed they can still access the road.”

The petition closes on March 5, 2021.
