Petition launched by two sisters to make a Hertfordshire road safer
It's after their brother's best friend died, while he suffered life-changing injuries in a car crash
The sisters of a man who was left with life-changing injuries in a car crash have launched a petition urging for a Hertfordshire road to be made safer.
Liam Sharpe was in the car with his best friend Ollie Gatfield, both Stevenage FC fans, on their way back from a match last January.
The pair was involved in a car crash on A602 near Hitchin, which cost Ollie's life and leaving Liam fighting for his.
Sophie Sharpe, Liam's sister, said: "On the 13th of January we got the most devastating news that changed a lot of people's lives, my brother Liam and Oliver who was basically part of our family were in a car accident on Charlton Road near Hitchin."
"My brother was taken into hospital to Addenbrooke's, he was fighting for his life and was in a coma, thankfully now he's on the road to recovery but unfortunately and sadly we lost our Oliver."
Since the accident, Liam has undergone regular tests and physiotherapy, however his condition requires costly adjustments and care.
Both Sophie and Liam's other sister Holly have, since, launched a petition to improve the safety of the road.
Sophie said: "Basically to help support other people knowing that awareness around how dangerous that road is, hopefully we can take that further and make a change so other families like ours and Oliver's family won't have to go through that suffering."
"We just want to try and get that out there to raise awareness."
A fundraising football match was played last week in Stevenage in memory of Ollie, while the funds collected will help support Liam and his family.
A fundraising page was set up for the game, and the sisters are now hoping to bring a change to the road condition through their petition to prevent another tragedy from happening in the future.
