One person has died after an explosion and fire in Bedford yesterday.

In a statement, Bedfordshire Police said emergency services were called just after 7.30am yesterday to reports of a house on fire in Cleat Hill.

One person was confirmed to have died and a second person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Bedford Borough Council has set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated.

Police said enquiries are ongoing to identify the cause of the explosion and advised residents still in their homes to keep their windows open.

People have also been asked to avoid the Cleat Hill area whilst work at the scene continues.
