People are feeling much lonelier than they were just three years ago.

Research by the Post Office found it's down to increased financial woes and a lack of communication and connection.

Almost two-thirds said a lack of connection with other people has been a contributing factor, while almost half said money worries are one of the main causes.

The research also found that people are choosing to visit shops and hospitality venues to cope with the lack of interaction and help combat their loneliness.

The most popular locations included a supermarket, a pub, a café or a restaurant.

St Albans Postmaster Raj Kaur said:

"I'm glad people are able to come and share their story with us, because who else are they going to talk to? Who else do see? I just feel really said for them to be honest. What is it going to cost me or whoever is in my Post Office to listen to what they have to say, have a laugh and a joke with them and put a smile on their face."

"We engage with all the people who come into our post Office it's not just, old, vulnerable people, you have a different age group of people, and each different age has a different sort of vulnerability or different loneliness in their own way."

Research also found those aged 18-24 have felt the loneliest over the last 6 months, with over two-thirds feeling isolated and disconnected with just 1 in 3 over the age of 65 feeling lonely.
