Rural roads safety campaign hits the streets of Hitchin
"Everyone has a responsibility to keep the roads safe"
The new pilot campaign aims to safeguard all rural road users.
The Rural Road Safety Campaign includes police, North Herts Council, Herts Fire and Rescue Service, Herts Highways, the British Horse Society and other local groups. Their aim is to make the rural roads in North Herts safer for everyone who uses them.
The campaign will focus on educating drivers and vulnerable road users - such as horse riders, cyclists, walkers and runners - on how to use rural roads and lanes safely.
On Saturday 19 February local officers will be joining members of the British Horse Society in Hitchin Market Square between 11am and 1pm, to promote the campaign’s road safety objectives and to talk to local residents about rural road use, addressing any concerns and offering advice.
Commenting on the campaign, Community Safety Sergeant Chris Adshead said: “Our rural roads are getting busier, with every type of road user, and we know many people who use them have concerns about safety. We want to understand these issues and put measures in place where we can, to help make them safer.
"Everyone has a responsibility to keep the roads safe.
“Everyone has the right to use the rural roads and it’s about making sure we understand the different road users’ needs and how to facilitate and respect them.
“The team will be in the Market Square from 11am – 1pm so please pop by for a chat if you would like any advice or raise any concerns or issues.”
