Dacorum Borough Council has launched a new 'tap to donate' scheme in Hemel Hempstead, in partnership with Hemel Hempstead Business Improvement District (BID).

It will allow shoppers the opportunity to donate to local homelessness charities at two contactless payment points; which will help local homelessness charities including DENS and the Salvation Army.

One of the points is located opposite Poundland with the second due to be installed inside Metro Bank.

Speaking to Greatest Hits, Strategic Housing Group Manager at Dacorum Borough Council, Natasha Beresford, said: "We wanted to make sure that there was a positive opportunity for Dacorum residents to be able to give support to homeless residents.

The importance of the scheme is to ensure we are giving responsibly and that the residents can be really confident that the money they are donating is going towards helping those individuals.

She added:

The money will fund things like hot meals and access to laundry facilities and clean clothing.

There will be mental health advice, counselling support and guidance available, as well as helping people with housing and homelessness services".

If successful, the scheme will be expanded to include other town centres or local shopping areas in Dacorum.
