Bedfordshire MP’s TikTok rap goes viral
Nadine Dorries took to TikTok to explain the Online Safety Bill
Mid Bedfordshire MP Nadine Dorries has released a new TikTok rap to explain the Online Safety Bill currently working its way through Parliament.
Bars dropped by the Conservative Culture Secretary include ‘It will force big tech to stop their terms being breached / and puts in measures to defend free speech’ and ‘It’s effectively a framework to protect internet users / from scams, illegal content and anonymous abusers’.
She ends: ‘If companies fail to comply with the law / fail to protect the users that they’re responsible for / the regulator Ofcom will have the power to fine / so platforms must keep people safe online’.
Users on the platform has a mixed response – one called it inspiring, while another commented ‘good grief’!
Twitter users have also had their say on the rap, with one user suggesting Dorries should enter Eurovision next year.
Online Safety Bill
The Online Safety Bill will force internet platforms to take responsibility for user posted content – who’ll be fined if they fail to keep users safe.
The Bill also includes provisions to make cyberflashing illegal and prevent children from accessing pornography.
Critics however say the legislation is vague and could curtail freedom of speech – something with Dorries says isn’t true in her rap.
Social media
Dorries is known for being active on social media. She recently tweeted a meme poking fun at sharing Netflix passwords – something she admitted to doing before a Commons Select Committee.
The streaming giant doesn’t allow users to share passwords outside of their household.
Dorries is also pursuing controversial plans to sell off Channel 4 and change the BBC’s funding arrangement.
