MK Dons SET provides Christmas hampers to almost 2,000 people
Alongside the hampers, the charity is also giving people food vouchers
Around 1,800 people across Milton Keynes will receive help from MK Dons Sport and Education Trust this Christmas.
For the third year in a row, the charity is preparing to donate Christmas hampers and food vouchers to hundreds of families and couples in need.
CEO Maralyn Smith explains what's in the box: "The idea is that we're giving a bit of a luxury box, which has things that you wouldn't necessarily go out and buy if you were thinking carefully about how you're spending your money. So things like chocolate, cakes, and biscuits.
"Alongside that, there is a family voucher for £50 that will feed a family of four for a week, and there is a couple's voucher for £25 that does the same thing."
"The Christmas period is probably the hardest time"
She adds: "I think over the Christmas period it's probably the hardest time. Not only are you trying to provide presents for your family, it's a time when, if you are working, potentially you've got to go five weeks on a salary.
"At the same time, everybody's at home so energy costs are increasing and food costs are increasing."
In order to put together the boxes and purchase the vouchers the Trust has raised around £21,000, mainly from sponsors, as well as having received donations.
"There's more families that need support"
According to Maralyn, the number of people in need year or year has grown: "Agencies are indicating there's more families that need that support.
"I think there's still that stigma that's attached to asking for help, so we're hoping that we can reach people who are just starting to identify that they need that little bit of extra help. At the same time, making sure we're getting to those people through the right agencies."
Working with Age UK, MK Act, Children's Services, and schools, MK Dons SET has said it's been able to identify those in need of help and it will be giving out the hampers ahead of Christmas.
