A 68-year-old has died and two others have been hospitalised for the effects of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in Blackberry Mead.
Emergency services were called to a property in Blackberry Mead, Stevenage, at around 5.45am this morning following reports of a fire.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, a 68-year-old man sadly died at the scene. A 49-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were taken to hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation.
No other residents were injured, but a neighbouring property was evacuated as a precaution.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed they are working with Herts Fire and Rescue Service to investigate the cause of the fire. A spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has sadly died. We are working closely with our fire service colleagues to establish what caused the fire."
The East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene to assist those affected. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
