Man convicted of manslaughter in Milton Keynes
Jay Lupton, 25, of Fen Street, has admitted to one count of manslaughter in connection with the death of 48-year-old Calvin Olawale Babatunde
A man has been convicted of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility after fatally stabbing his neighbour in Milton Keynes.
At Luton Crown Court today (22 January), 25-year-old Jay Lupton, of Fen Street, Milton Keynes, admitted to one count of manslaughter in connection with the death of 48-year-old Calvin Olawale Babatunde.
The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday 25 January 2024, when Thames Valley Police were called by South Central Ambulance Service at 6.47pm to a building on Fen Street. Calvin was found with stab wounds, and despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.10pm.
Detective Inspector Alice Broad of the Major Crime Unit described the circumstances of the case: “Calvin Olawale Babatunde and Jay Lupton were neighbours in Fen Street and had become friends while living there, although this friendship had deteriorated in the months leading to Calvin’s death.
“On the evening of the incident, Lupton went to Calvin’s property and, without provocation, attacked him with a knife. Lupton was later captured on CCTV leaving the scene on foot and went to the house of a relative, who was unaware of what had occurred.
“Later that evening, Lupton returned to the police cordon that had been set up, where he was arrested. During searches of the scene, a knife was found in Calvin’s flat, and forensic analysis confirmed Lupton’s DNA was on the weapon.”
Following a detailed investigation, Lupton was charged with murder four days after the incident. His plea of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility was accepted by the court and the prosecution.
“Calvin was killed in the place he should have felt safest, his home, and by someone he had supported and helped while they lived in Fen Street,” DI Broad added.
Lupton is scheduled to be sentenced at Luton Crown Court on 28 February.
