Major demolition works have begun at London Luton Airport following a fire which caused a partial collapse to the structure and damage to 1200 vehicles.
The fire was caused by a vehicle which burst into flames on the evening of 10 October, further causing cancellations and major delays to flights for 24 hours.
A structural assessment had been conducted in early November, with London Luton Airport authorities confirming that the car park would be fully demolished due to the extent of the structural damage.
Cranes had been used to remove a number of untouched vehicles located on the top deck of the carpark, with the rest of the structure deemed unstable with no access to vehicles located on other levels.
Most insurance claims had been settled, and individuals who had not yet received their final settlements were encouraged to reach out to their insurance companies promptly.
London Luton Airport has been working closely with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) and the Association of British Insurers to facilitate the claims process and address the incident as swiftly as possible.
The Airport assures vehicles will be removed as part of the dismantling process, with those cars being managed by the salvage company appointed by insurers following removal.
