Luton will be lit up today as the annual Christmas light switch on will be taking place later this evening.

The turn on will be facilitated by Minions, Bob and Stuart, who will also be meeting guests in the town centre.

As well as the switch on at 6pm, there will also be events starting from midday including a grotto in the Mall, as well as a variety of musical performances.

Lights go ahead in spite of the cost of living crisis

The Leader of Luton Council, Hazel Simmons, says despite the rising cost of electricity the council were determined to not let the cost of living crisis get in the way on an annual tradition.

She said: "We took a decision at the budget in February and when we looked at everything, we decided there would be numerous events happening this year and one of them was of the lights switching on."

She added: "It's difficult with these things, when you have to make decisions and we'll look at it again when we look at the budget for next year. But you've got to do some activities that brighten up people's lives and we think some of these are worth it."

"It brings people together"

According to Hazel, the cost of living crisis makes events like these more important than ever: "It brings people together, so that's very good for cohesion in the town. All our communities come along to it, they mix in it, and have fun together."

She concluded: "It's not an easy time of year for people at this time, with the energy rates, cost of living, and all the other things. So it gives them a few hours to think about something else and have a bit of fun."

A number of other Christmas light switch ons are also happening across Bucks, Beds, and Herts this weekend.
