Luton North MP pushes for fireworks legislation reform
If approved, a legislation could be introduced as early as the start of next year

Sarah Owen, MP for Luton North, is advocating for changes to UK fireworks legislation, focusing on public safety, noise reduction, and limiting access to high-decibel fireworks.
Her outlined proposal includes reducing the maximum noise level of fireworks available for public purchase to 90 decibels, down from the current 120 decibels.
While she had pushed for an fireworks legislation in the past, this time is the first the proposed bill has potential to pass.
With already established cross-party support, the legislation would focus on reducing the impact to those with PTSD, pet owners, and families with young children.
Ms Owen said: "I get hundreds of emails about it.
"People shouldn’t be able to buy these big bangers and rockets off the High Street."
Safety is a significant concern as well, with Ms Owen noting that fireworks, being explosives, can pose serious risks.
"This is about tightening the laws. These laws around fireworks haven’t changed for decades, so it’s time that we tighten them up," she added.
Ms Owen’s legislation would also extend to online sales, addressing the increasing number of people purchasing fireworks through digital platforms.
The proposed timeline for the bill's passage, however, may not align with upcoming celebrations like Guy Fawkes Night and New Year's Eve.
The legislation has been designed to address both public enjoyment and safety concerns, aiming to make fireworks safer for everyone.
