Luton deep cleaning sees roads closing between now and May
More than 30 roads will be shut, cleaned, and reopened within the next few months
Luton Council's announced a programme of deep cleans will be taking place across the town, from this week until May 30th.
The scheme hopes to make Luton "a cleaner, greener and more attractive place for the people who live there."
With over 30 roads being cleaned between now and May, residents are being asked to keep cars on their driveway, or on unrestricted roads for periods of time, to make sure a full clean can take place.
The cleaning will include sweeping pathways and streets, relining faded road marks, clearing away litter and weeds, cleaning out water drains, and pruning overgrown trees.
It's hoped elements of the cleaning, including drain cleaning, will help with issues such as flooding in the future.
Luton Council say that waste is an issue for the town, including through fly-tipping, and the presence of litter.
Pedestrians will still be able to access the roads, and those who are unable to move their cars will see a vehicle lifter relocate it, with enough time given to warn locals about when their roads will be closed.
The deep clean is part of the Council's War on Waste, Cllr Javed Hussain, portfolio holder for highways, said: “Giving these roads some extra attention is important to ensure they are clean, and the drains are working properly to alleviate flooding. Closing the affected roads is a minor inconvenience to ensure a clean area in which to live, and we ask residents to park elsewhere for this short time.
“We hope these works will help people to foster a sense of care and respect for the local environment and pride in the town in which they live and work, but we need residents to cooperate with us and help keep the streets tidy."
