20 athletes from across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire have headed out for the Tokyo Olympics.

It's been a great Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics for Team GB, we've had our best ever start to an Olympics and already made history.

Leighton Buzzard's Charlotte Dujardin has made history by becoming Britian's most successful Olympian.

She won her sixth Olympic medal in the individual dressage final at Tokyo 2020 after winning the bronze.

The day before Dujardin equalled the most number of Olympic medals won by a British woman after winning bronze in the team dressage. She won two golds at London 2012 and gold and silver at Rio 2016.

She's been congratulated by people across the country including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old twins Jennifer and Jessica Gadirova, from Aylesbury, formed half of the quartet that has managed to earn the long awaited medal in women's gymnastics.

The team included Slough gymnast 18-year-old Amelie Morgan, along with Alice Kinsella who was born in Essex but lives in Birmingham.

History continued to be made in the Olympic all-round final with Jessica finishing 10th, the best ever result by a British woman. Jennifer also competed and finished an impressive 13th.

However, there was heartbreak for Aylesbury's Ellen White and the women's football team.

They have suffered a devastating 4-3 defeat to Australia to go out in the Olympic football quarter-finals.

They conceded an 89th minute equaliser, before missing a penalty and conceding twice in extra-time in Japan.

Ellen White gave a performance to be proud of scoring a hat-trick.

There is more to come from the other athletes from Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire though.

Like Max Whitlock from Hemel Hempstead who is attending his third Olympic Games and Laura Kenny who's from Hertfordshire facing a busy week - with team and individual races.
