Litter pickers needed in Dacorum for million mile mission
The Great British Spring Clean will be returning this year
People in Dacorum are being encouraged to join in with a million mile mission.
The Great British Spring Clean will be returning this year, with a target of litter picking a million miles around the UK.
Dacorum Borough Council is supporting the campaign and is calling on people to join in throughout May and June.
Keep Britain Tidy has based its Million Mile goal on the idea that it takes the average person 20 minutes to walk a mile while litter picking.
This means the target can be hit if 250,000 people pick up litter for an hour and 20 minutes.
Individuals, schools, councils, local groups and businesses can all join in.
Last year, more than 250 local volunteers collected more than 150 bags of rubbish and 101 bags of recycling from around the borough.
Dacorum's outdoor spaces are said to have gained a "renewed sense of appreciation" over the past year, but they have also experienced a rise in litter, especially Covid related litter such as facemasks and gloves.
In the last three months, volunteer litter pickers and Street Champions have collected 324 bags of rubbish from their local areas.
People can become part of the local clear up by signing up to litter pick anytime during the months of May or June.
It could be in a local street or park, while walking the dog or trying Plogging (jogging and litter picking at the same time).
Schools can also join in the Great Big School Clean, with all litter picks completed by 13 June counting towards the campaign.
Dacorum Borough Council will be loaning out litter picking equipment, including litter pickers, recycling bags and rubbish bags, as well as advice.
All interested volunteers will be given a guide on how to have a Covid safe litter pick, with more information on the Keep Britain Tidy website.
People can also find out more about how to take part in the Great British Spring Clean in Dacorum on the council's website.
