Climate group in Herts encourages residents to do their bit for the planet
An environmental group is calling on residents across Hertfordshire to take on simple steps to protect the planet.
Since its creation three years ago, a social media group called 'Your Planet Saving Ideas' has reached over 16,000 members.
The idea, developed by Phil Skone from Knebworth in Hertfordshire, was to create a platform for people to share their tips and tricks so that everyone can do their little bit for the planet.
It now has members from all over the world, which creates a wider network of ideas.
For the majority of people, it starts with a conversation about what can be done on an individual scale to help protect the environment.
Phil Skone said: "The simplest thing that everyone can do is just think about their lifestyle, how it's affecting the planet, what they could do to change and then put these ideas into action and then it becomes a cyclical process."
"...it's a really serious issue..."
Whether it is done by recycling properly, buying sustainable fashion or feeding wildlife in gardens and public spaces, little steps can be taken.
In fact, Phil Skone described the rule of eight 'R' which can be brought into everyone's lifestyle.
He said: "Refuse single use, reduce consumption, reuse everything, refurbish old stuff, repair before you replace, repurpose and recycle. That's the last option."
With the various catastrophes which have hit different parts of the world this summer, Mr Skone said it's never been more important to join forces and help protect the environment.
He said: "It is a really serious issue and it's been highlighted even more this year with all the fires and floods and the increased temperatures of the oceans."
In addition to the rule of "R", Mr Skone spoke of Take the Jump, an initiative which encourages people to end clutter, travel fresh, eat green, dress retro, or holiday local.
