Hundreds open up their farms to educate and challenge outdated perceptions
New research shows a "shocking" disconnect between people's perceptions of farming and the reality
A farmer on the Essex-Hertfordshire border is opening up her farm this weekend, alongside hundreds of other farmers across the UK, to educate the public on how their food is produced.
It's after research shows only one in five Brits believe farming is involved in tackling climate change and 25% think people need to be born into a farming family to become a farmer.
On 8 June 2025, hundreds of farmers across Britain will open their gates, inviting the public to experience the work farmers do while caring for nature.
Bryony Graham is a farmer in Nazeing who is taking part for the third year running.
She tells Greatest Hits Radio: "it blows my mind that my kids' friends still don't know that food is grown on trees or from the ground."
"There is such a disconnect between people's perceptions of farming and what we actually do."
"Open Farm Sunday is set to dispel myths and cultivate connections between the public and farmers."
The data by media researcher, Mortar research, surveyed more than 2000 people.
It found Gen Z are the least likely to know British farms use technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones, and robotics.
15% of those surveyed were aware AI is already being used in crop management.
Fewer than a quarter knew GPS is used to help with planting or that robotic systems were used in dairy farming.
Mrs Graham adds: "I think it's really important farmers play their part in telling people where the food they buy from the supermarket has come from.
"There is a huge appetite for it too, and I think Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic opportunity for farmers to tell that story directly."
Annabel Shackleton, LEAF's Open Farm Sunday Manager says: “Gen Z’s credentials when it comes to caring about the environment are second to none.
“But one area where it seems they are yet to make the link is farming.
“Agriculture plays a vital role in tackling climate change, protecting and farming with nature, and feeding the nation sustainably.
“Open Farm Sunday is all about breaking down barriers and creating connections, challenging outdated perceptions, and showing everyone, just how innovative, diverse and forward-looking farming really is.”
