Hospice faces critical challenges in this new year as costs rise
Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City supports in-patients and patients out in the community
As the new year begins, a Hertfordshire hospice is one of many facing new challenges.
National insurance rises coupled with ever-increasing costs, and rising demand for services at Isabel Hospice, in Welwyn Garden City, are creating additional hurdles, with the prospect of cuts if the situation doesn't ease in months to come.
And these challenges are expected to be seen across the country.
"Our costs have gone up considerably," explained Chief Executive Helen Glenister. She detailed that the hospice's running costs, including wages, food, and utilities, have risen significantly, creating challenges in maintaining the level of care the community relies on.
"Our priority has always been delivering compassionate, high-quality care to those who need it most, but the landscape is becoming increasingly difficult.
"We’re seeing a rise in the number of patients requiring our support, but the funding and resources we rely on simply aren’t keeping pace", she added.
At the same time, the Hospice is facing a growing demand for its services.
With an aging population and an increased awareness of the benefits of hospice care, more families are turning to these services. "We’re honoured to support so many people during such a critical time in their lives," said Ms Glenister, "but it’s challenging to expand our services without the corresponding increase in funding and staff."
Adding to the burden, she noted a growing reliance on their services, particularly as public health services face delays: "The NHS backlog is a real issue for patients who need palliative care quickly, and that has meant we are seeing more referrals than before."
However the Hospice is not giving up despite these difficulties.
Community support has always been the reason behind its success, which is a testament to its over 600 volunteers.
"Our team works tirelessly to provide compassionate care, and we will continue to do all we can for the people who need us", added Ms Glenister.
"Our supporters are incredible, and their generosity keeps us going. Whether through donations, volunteering, or participating in fundraising events, they make an enormous difference."
