Though, unlike the London Fire Commissioner, they're not calling for a ban

People across Herts are being urged not to use disposable barbecues as the warm and dry weather continues.

Last week, London's Fire Commissioner called for a total ban on disposable barbecues following one of the busiest weeks in their history.

The recording breaking temperatures a couple of weeks ago led to a huge number of fires and there are concerns that the situation could be repeated due to a possible second summer heatwave.

"Please don't use them"

While Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue are not calling for an absolutely ban, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill has said, "we do completely agree with the point the London Fire Brigade are making about how hazardous these barbeques are are.

"So, at the moment, we would completely align ourselves with them by saying please don't use them."

He added, "the ground is so dry, so even when people are trying to do the right thing, these barbeques can cause problems because they stay hot for a very long time and the grass is tinder dry."

Do not use on balconies

People living in flats are also being reminded to not use disposable barbeques on their balconies. Mr Tuhill said, "across the country last year there were some significant fires around people having barbeques on their balconies which then caught fire."

Already supermarkets like Waitrose and Aldi have said they will no longer stock them.
