The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to charitable organisations.

Sunnyside Rural Trust is one of 241 organisations across the UK to receive the award.

Charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups have received the prestigious award this week for delivering exceptional service within their communities over the past year and beyond.

The Hertfordshire based charity train people with learning disabilities to acquire skills in a number of rural activities.

Activities include beekeeping, looking after chickens, growing a wide range of plants and produce, landscaping and garden maintenance.

The Minister for Civil Society and Youth hailed volunteers as “the backbone of local communities” during the national recovery from COVID-19.

They work across Dacorum in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Northchurch in a range of settings such as ancient woodland, allotments, orchards, greenhouses and a cafe and farm shop.
