Hertfordshire celebrates 11th Pride event
Watford welcomes the 11th edition of Herts Pride.
Hertfordshire welcomes its 11th edition of Pride at Cassiobury Park in Watford.
Over 4,500 people are expected this year, with activities planned to cater for families, young people and older crowds.
Amongst activities lined up this year are a dog show, stage performances, and rides, with plenty of food and music all day and evening.
The movement protesting for gay rights was initiated in the US decades ago, and now extends to LGBTQ+ rights and celebrates inclusion.
Clive Duffy, one of the organisers of the event, said: "Pride is still a protest. There is strong homophobia and transphobia in the UK and around the world, so we are here to say that we're still here, we're not going anywhere, and nothing can change that."
Herts Pride sees itself as different from other events around the country as it prioritises the community feel, and focuses on bringing together families.
Mr Duffy added: "We're known nationally as one of the old-fashioned pride. We are family-focused."
Alongside activities is a range of stalls, including Proud Hornets, an LGBTQIA+ supporter group for Watford FC.
Ben, from Proud Hornets, said: "The impact of this Pride is the way the LGBTQ+ community is made a part of the wider community. It shows people that there's support out there and they're not alone."
Steve Austin is a Folk musician and will be performing today.
He said: "It's a great celebration of how far we've come. And the weather's on our side so it will make an even better event."
