Significant repair and restoration work is set to start on 21-23 High Street South Dunstable, to improve its historic shop front.

The repair work is part of the Dunstable High Street Heritage Action zone, which is run by Dunstable Town Council, supported by Historic England.

Currently the buildings have post-war shop fronts that date back to the 18th and mid-to-late 19th century; one shop front, number 21 was the former home of James Tibbett, creator of the town’s very first newspaper.

Capital Developments Group have consented to the works being carried out by contractors DJ Russell and overseen by Conception Architects Studio, which will include the restoration of historic shop fronts, the repair and reinstatement of first floor windows on both properties, and the repair of the historic roof.

Its thought, the works will open the closed commercial space on the ground floor and provide residential accommodation on both the ground and first floors within the proposed development plans.

Dunstable Town Mayor Cllr Liz Jones said:

“I am delighted to witness the careful and dedicated restoration of the shop front at 21-23 High Street South. The historic Moore’s building is a monumental asset to Dunstable’s High Street. The works to preserve the character and heritage of the building will revitalise its purpose and secure a future where the building remains integral to the Dunstable Conservation Area for generations to come.’’
