New Cycle Path for Aylesbury in £1.4m upgrade
The Platinum Way has replaced the Emerald route
The Emerald Way cycle route in Aylesbury has undergone a £1.4m renovation and rebrand in a nod to Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Phase 1 of the Platinum way has been completed and aims to improve the cycle route through wider footways, shared use crossings and new signage.
The 5km cycle route runs from Aylesbury Vale Parkway along Rabans Lane and through Fairford Leys into the town centre.
Stephen Broadbent is the Cabinet Member for Transport at Buckinghamshire council and says it will improve links between parts of the town.
"This means you've got a much smoother connection between the existing gem routes and the Green Way that was opened last year."
"This is a big upgrade and can be used by so many people, I think it's fantastic for the town and Buckinghamshire."
There are suggestions that the expanded cycle network may impact other road users in the area. Cllr Broadbent suggests however that this has been considered at length.
He says: "In phase 2, which is still to come, also puts additional segregated crossings in, along places like Fowler Road, which will be on a raised basis."
"This means there will be a lot less interruption to people using the cycle way as they move around town."
"We've deliberately re-routed section of it to be on a limited traffic route, which makes the whole experience that bit more pleasant."
