Hertfordshire Police are investigating following reports of 'horrendous' vandalism at a cemetery in Watford.

It's understood graves have been damaged at Carpenders Park Cemetery on Oxhey Lane.

Inspector Will Rogers-Overy said: Enquiries are ongoing to further establish the circumstances, and extra patrols have been deployed in the area to reassure the community.

Senior officers are working closely with local community leaders, to identify those family members who will be most affected. In the coming days we will engage further with the Muslim community who will have been particularly impacted by this horrendous crime.

“If anyone has information or witnessed the criminal damage take place, please contact police.”

Councillor Abbas Merali, Conservative Councillor for Moor Park and Eastbury said he's devastated by what has happened: "I am devastated to report the distressing news that graves within the Muslim burial section of Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery have been vandalised. Reports confirm that plaques on children’s graves were destroyed, and other graves were subjected to shameful acts of vandalism.

"These abhorrent actions have caused immense anguish to grieving families and profound hurt across our community.

"My thoughts go out to those families who have been impacted by this barbaric act.

"I have spoken directly with the Superintendent Sally Williams of Hertfordshire Police, who confirmed that this is being treated as a serious and targeted act of vandalism. A full investigation is now underway. I will be following up with the Hertfordshire Police team and our MP Gagan Mohindra to ensure no stones are left unturned.
