A Councillor in Buckinghamshire is warning the Government's one cost of living support payment coming at the end of next month - is "so far from what's needed"

The £150 benefit will automatically be sent out from September to those facing additional costs brought on by their condition such as mobility and care issues.

"It's deeply frustrating that we've had a Government that's continued to sit on its hands throughout the summer"

Anders Christensen is the leader of the Liberal Democrats at Bucks Council.

"I do believe that providing direct assistance to the disabled in terms of a financial grant to help out with the rising costs and energy crisis is the right approach, but it just needs to be at a level that's meaningful."

"The £150 being offered by the Government is almost no help at all"

He says people with disabilities are being disproportionately impacted by the crisis.

"Disabled residents are often in a position where there personal level of inflation is far higher than the standard measure for the economy as a whole."

"When you've already got banks like Goldman Sachs talking about 18-22% rates of inflation for the end of this year, the individuals will often see that level of inflation being far higher for them.

"It's deeply frustrating that we've had a Government that's continued to sit on its hands throughout the summer, and even now, we still have no idea whether the Government will help or not and, if so, how."

What have the Government said?

Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Chloe Smith said:

"We know disabled people can face additional costs, which is why we are acting to help reduce the financial pressures on the most vulnerable."

"This £150 disability payment is on top of the £1,200 most low income benefit claimants will also receive and alongside wider support targeted at disabled people, including help with transport and prescription costs.

"We know it’s a worrying time for some people and I’d urge them to check they are getting all the support on offer by searching Help for Households".
