Bedfordshire's roads have been given an £89,000 funding boost.

The Office of Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) has allocated the cash to make the roads safer with plans this year for a further £100,000 investment.

This investment fits with the Police and Crime Commissioner’s plans to ensure we reduce crime occurring instead of just dealing with the harm it causes.

The Bedfordshire Road Fund recognises that road safety is an important part of community safety and helps to reduce the amount of people being harmed.

A number of parish and town councils bid into the scheme run by the OPCC, alongside the local authorities the OPCC will work to implement these ideas through the collaborative Strategic Roads Board for Bedfordshire.

This initial funding has gone to:

• Bolnhurst and Keysoe

• Sharnbrook Council

• Luton Council

• Renhold Parish Council

• Elstow Parish Council

• Meppershall Council

• Bike safe - Beds, Cambs & Herts Joint Protective Services – Road Policing Unit

Deputy Chief Constable Rodenhurst, chair of the Strategic Roads Board said “The board was really pleased to see so many local bids and we hope this money goes towards furthering the collaborative approach we have to road safety.”

The second round of bids will open in the Autumn.

Clare Kelly, Chief Executive for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, said:

“With the Covid-19 pandemic we are aware that many people took a break from driving, or driving during that time may have felt very different and we want to ensure we put supportive and preventative measures in place to help everyone return to the roads safely, and this ambition will be supported by the Autumn Roads Fund.”
