Emma Reynolds, the MP for Wycombe and recently appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury, has outlined her priorities in government, emphasising financial stability, access to capital for businesses, and the importance of the financial services sector in driving economic growth.

Ms Reynolds, who was appointed to the Treasury role in January 2025, described her new position as a crucial responsibility in ensuring the UK’s financial system remains robust while also supporting businesses.

“My role involves working closely with the financial services sector to ensure financial stability and maintain a strong, sound financial system,” she said.

She highlighted the significance of the sector in supporting economic activity, saying, “The financial services sector plays a crucial role in our economy. It helps people buy homes, manage risk, and support businesses. It’s a real engine for economic growth, and I see my role as making sure it works effectively for everyone.”

Ms Reynolds had previously worked in the financial sector, proving helpful in her current role.

“I worked at a trade association in the City representing UK-based financial services firms. I was also previously the Pensions Minister, and there's a lot of crossover because the pensions industry is the third largest in the world, with nearly £3 trillion in assets under management,” she explained.

She added, “Financial services firms are at the forefront of managing those investments, so that experience gave me valuable insight and preparation for this role. I bring both expertise and experience in financial services, which I think has given me a strong head start.”

Ms Reynolds however insisted her work as the MP for Wycombe remains a priority.

“It's an absolute privilege to be the Member of Parliament for Wycombe,” she said. “I'm the first Labour MP for over 70 years, so I've been hitting the ground running—meeting local businesses, visiting local schools, and listening to the concerns of residents.”

She highlighted key issues affecting her constituents, including transport and healthcare. “Whether it's issues like speeding cars, challenges in the city, or concerns about the NHS—particularly access to GPs and hospital services—there are some big challenges ahead,” she said. “One of the reasons I got into politics was to make a difference on these issues.”

A major focus of her Treasury role, Ms Reynolds noted, will be ensuring businesses can access capital to grow and succeed.

“We want to create the right conditions for businesses—particularly small and medium-sized enterprises—to access capital and grow,” she said. “They help us buy homes, manage risk, and play a very vital role in society in terms of the services they provide.”

Since taking office, Ms Reynolds has emphasised the need for proportionate regulation in financial services, arguing that while oversight is necessary, it should not hinder growth.

She has also voiced support for efforts to encourage retail investment in UK companies and make financial advice more accessible.
