Hertfordshire police are warning businesses and residents after several reports of fake banknotes being used across the county.

Over the past two weeks, four incidents involving counterfeit cash have been reported in Bishop’s Stortford, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, and St Albans.

More than £1,000 in fake £10 and £20 notes has been handed over, primarily during transactions on Facebook Marketplace.

In one case, a seller was paid £400 in counterfeit notes, which were described as having a "new crisp feel." Close examination revealed clear tape or cellophane strips across the notes. Another report highlighted that all the notes had identical serial numbers.

Detective Inspector Pete Hankins from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit urged people to remain cautious when accepting cash payments.

“We’re urging people to be vigilant when accepting payment in cash and make sure to examine the notes carefully. You can find out how to spot fake banknotes by visiting the Bank of England site,” said DI Hankins.

He advised people not to dispose of counterfeit notes or pass them to a bank. Instead, contact Hertfordshire Constabulary on 101 to arrange for an officer to collect the notes for examination.

More guidance on identifying fake banknotes is available on the Bank of England website.
