Police in Dacorum are urging drivers "not to put their foot down" this summer.

In Hertfordshire, speeding drivers were involved in 52 fatalities and serious injuries in the past year.

Eighty percent of motorists stopped for speeding in the county in 2020 were men, and over half (56 percent) of these were aged between 22 and 40.

The warning comes after lockdown restrictions eased further earlier this week.

During the campaign, police will be patrolling roads and engaging with anyone who is speeding, as well as using four new road safety camera vans.

Chief Inspector Simon Tabert said:

"There have been restrictions in place for over a year now and it is understandable that many people will be looking forward to getting out and about this summer – but please ensure that wherever you are driving to this summer, you do so safely.

"Speed limits are in place for a reason.

"We want our roads to be safe for everyone: whether you’re a motorist, a cyclist or a pedestrian.

"It goes without saying that the faster you drive, the less time you have to react and any mistake by you or another is amplified by that speed.

"Never exceed the limit for the road you’re on and please make sure your speed is appropriate for the driving conditions.

"The speed limits are the top safe speed for that road – it is often safer to travel at lower speeds, such as in bad weather and where there are pedestrians or cyclists, particularly children.

"Many drivers abide by the speed limits and we want to thank everyone who plays their part in keeping the roads safe.

"For those who are tempted to put their foot down, please remember that speeding significantly increases the risk that you will kill or seriously injure yourself or other road users."
