As another heatwave arrives and the summer holidays approach, local veterinarian Dr Anna Foreman is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep animals safe in the rising temperatures.

With prolonged high temperatures, vets report that heatstroke cases in pets increase by five times, and other issues like dehydration and flea infestations become far more common.

To help pet owners prepare, Dr Foreman has shared her top tips for keeping animals safe during hot weather:

Water and Shade: Pets should always have access to fresh, cool water and a shaded area, even when indoors. Using fans, damp towels, and multiple water bowls around the home can help keep them comfortable.

Check Pavement Temperatures: A simple test for pavement safety is to place your hand on the surface for seven seconds. If it’s too hot to hold, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day and instead choose early morning or late evening outings.

Never Leave Dogs in Cars: Despite ongoing warnings, 40% of UK dog owners have admitted to leaving their dogs in hot cars. Even just 20 minutes in a parked vehicle can be fatal due to the rapid rise in internal temperatures.

Recognise the Signs of Heatstroke: Pet owners should watch for symptoms such as excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, collapse, or shallow breathing. Different animals may show different signs, so it’s important to know what’s normal for your pet.

High-Risk Breeds: Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs, bulldogs, and boxers are especially vulnerable to heatstroke and should be kept indoors and rested on particularly hot days.

With temperatures continuing to rise, pet owners are encouraged to remain alert and take proactive steps to keep their animals safe.
