Police in Milton Keynes say the dog which killed a 4-year-old girl in her back garden last week was not a banned breed.

In a statement Thames Valley Police also confirmed the child has now been formally identified as Alice Stones - she was named locally last week.

Officers say they're not in a position to confirm the exact breed of the dog, with further testing required.

Here's the statement in full:

"Following the fatal dog attack in Netherfield, Milton Keynes last Tuesday (31/1), we can confirm that formal identification has now taken place."

"The four-year-old girl has been identified as Alice Stones.

"There has also been a large amount of speculation around the breed of the dog. Although we are not in a position to confirm the exact breed of the dog due to the requirement for further testing, we are able to confirm that the dog is not a banned breed.

"We'd also reiterate our ask that the privacy of Alice's family is respected at this extremely difficult time."
