The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an independent investigation, after an off-duty Bedfordshire Police officer was found dead on police premises in Luton.

It happened last Monday (31 May).

Bedfordshire Police has confirmed the force referred the incident to the IOPC because of prior police contact while the officer was off duty.

A spokesperson said:

"While the circumstances of the incident are being looked at, it is not believed that anybody else was involved.

"The thoughts of everyone in the force are with the officer's family, friends and colleagues at this devastating time."

Meanwhile an IOPC spokesperson said:

"After we were notified by the force at around 10.30am that morning we sent investigators to the scene in Luton and to the police post incident procedure to begin gathering information.

"Our investigation, which is still at a very early stage, will look at contact police had with the officer while he was off duty in the days prior to his death.

"Our thoughts are with the officer's family, friends and colleagues at this sad time and we will be in contact with his family in due course to explain our role."
