Community-based programs bring healing and unity to refuge seekers
The Refuge Council have been supporting refugees mental health through workshops
In the East of England, therapeutic workshops and therapy sessions have emerged as powerful tools in supporting the mental well-being of asylum seekers.
These community-based programs, organized by the refuge council, aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment where individuals can find healing and connection during challenging circumstances.
Hanna Tree, a therapist, told us about the positive impact of workshops and therapeutic group work in bringing people together, not only from different cultures but also from diverse backgrounds within the asylum-seeking community.
"These kinds of initiatives," Tree explains, "don't require anyone saying anything. That is beneficial to people, as they can focus on dance and movement. That is healing in itself and brings people together."
Workshops and therapeutic group sessions serve as a platform for asylum seekers to express themselves, engage in non-verbal communication, and form connections with others who have shared similar experiences. They provide a refuge from the language barriers that can often pose challenges to effective communication.
One aspect of these programs involves creating spaces within schools, where refugee children in the Colchester area can benefit from therapeutic group sessions. These sessions, facilitated by trained professionals, aim to address the unique needs and challenges faced by young asylum seekers. By providing a supportive environment, these workshops help children navigate their emotions, build resilience, and develop coping mechanisms.
In addition to school-based programs, organizations extend their support to asylum seekers residing in temporary accommodations, such as hotels. Here, dance and movement programs are introduced, allowing participants to express themselves through physical movement and rhythm. This inclusive approach provides asylum seekers with an opportunity to engage in an activity that transcends language barriers and fosters a sense of unity and belonging.
The therapeutic benefits of these workshops and therapy sessions are multifaceted. They not only provide a much-needed outlet for emotional expression but also help participants alleviate stress, combat feelings of isolation, and improve their overall mental well-being. By engaging in these activities, asylum seekers can find solace, develop a sense of community, and regain a sense of control over their lives.
