As Extinction Rebellion nationally prepares for two weeks of actions about to start in London and other major cities, local XR groups everywhere have been taking action over the Bank Holiday weekend in the build-up.
Aylesbury Vale XR have been busy drawing attention to the dangers of fossil fuels, and alerting the public generally to the ever increasing need to take urgent action to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.
The action by Aylesbury XR on Saturday saw a massive banner fixed to a bridge across the A41, with all due care for safety.
The banner makes one clear bold statement: 'Climate Emergency'.
As local climate protestor, Kevin Piper said:
"As a retired father of 3 with a grandson, I intend to be In Parliament Square next week to add my voice and body to those that are prepared to take action.
"I am seriously concerned about the threat of climate change on my family's future and the world. Politicians have been discussing this threat for decades and the scientists are absolutely clear that it is time for people and governments to act, to tell the truth about what we need to do, and to produce a clear plan for the way ahead.
"I am fed up with empty words from successive governments. While we struggle to deal with the coronavirus crisis, we must not ignore the massive crises that lie ahead without urgent action now."
The government is being urged by Extinction Rebellion to enact the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill and along with this major legislation, to go beyond politics by convening a national Citizens' Assembly, with a commitment from Government to implement its recommendations.
