Buckinghamshire: It's time to talk about mental health

Bucks Mind are asking us to end the stigma around mental health

Ending the stigma around mental health is the aim of a call for us to all get talking in Buckinghamshire today.

The Big Chat has been organised by Bucks Mind.

Isobel Shea works for the charity - she's felt that stigma as she dealt with her own mental health issues:

"It is just debilitating and to have had to have gone through those chaotic, traumatic experiences, knowing they are unnecessary and that actually we can change the way people think and stop it from happening definitely motivates me."

The aim of today is to encourage us to just simply talk about mental health, with the view to end that stigma and descrimination.

Isobel said that really does have an impact:

"It was experiencing the stigma and discrimination that really was the hardest part for me.

"I had to have help from the crisis team because of that, of people's judgement."

She told us that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, so within four years all of that group could have had a struggle of some kind.

Being able to talk about mental health with those around her helped Isobel tackle her depression, anxiety and PTSD.

How to get involved today

Isobel says it doesn't have to be daunting.

Bucks Mind are asking us to call someone we care about and just have a small conversation about mental health.

She told us that just showing we care can make a big impact - we don't have to fix problems.

You can let the charity know you are getting involved here.
