Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is known for their active research. They published their 1000th study on 21st July 2021.

Their latest milestone marks 18 years since their first study, pinpointing a key point in their journey so far. Their clinical Research Officer recalled: “The Research Department was established, and the first study was registered in 2003.”

The hospital now has 35 team members in the successful Research and Innovation Department, as well as having support staff members in other departments ranging from Pharmacy to Radiology.

Ground-breaking research

In 2020, the department also won several awards for its research contribution as well as the Trust’s Chief Nurse’s ‘Nurse and Midwife Team of the Year Award’ this year.

The Trust has also just opened a brand-new Research and Innovation Centre. The bespoke building is fully equipped with facilities to continue improving experiences for patients and staff, and other people visiting the hospital.

The new centre is in Stoke Mandeville and is designed to give patients direct access to the latest modern healthcare by giving their clinicians access to services such as the newest digital developments, medical technologies, and artificial intelligence.

Their research is also adding value to the local economy by engaging with the best minds locally and beyond to forward their work and support their research studies into the future.

The Trust’s Head of Research and Innovation Dr Nana Theodorou said: “A lot of benefits have been in relation to our patients across the region in that they are now able to access a large number of treatments that are not available otherwise unless they participate in research.”

They have also been integral over the course of the pandemic, and have contributed to knowledge around Covid-19. Dr Theodorou added: "During the recent Covid pandemic, the trust has done very well in supporting 6 urgent public health research studies and recruiting all the 2000 participants."

"So that has contributed to very important data and treatments to drive our understanding of Covid forward."

Grateful for those who has supported them along the way, Dr Theodorou noted: “A big thank you to everybody involved in the success, not just from the staff but especially our patients willing to give up the time to try treatments and come up for the follow-up visits.”

“We look forward to the opportunities ahead, with our brand-new bespoke innovation facility on the grounds of Stoke Mandeville Hospital. An exciting time ahead, the future is bright. And we look forward to doing even more ground-breaking research.”
