Bletchley Park to Launch New Exhibition on Artificial Intelligence
'The Age of AI' exhibition will explore the role of AI in everyday life, its opportunities, and its risks
Bletchley Park is opening a new exhibition, exploring how Artificial Intelligence will shape our lives in the future - on Tuesday (February 4th).
The Age of AI, will offer visitors an insight into the growing impact of artificial intelligence on society; across industries, from healthcare to environmental science, while also addressing concerns about its risks.
The temporary exhibition will be held at Bletchley Park, a historic site known for its role in World War Two codebreaking and modern computing advancements. It follows the site’s selection as the venue for the first global AI Safety Summit in November 2023, where world leaders discussed AI regulation and safety.
Tilly Davis, Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager at Bletchley Park Trust, explained: “The Age of AI explores how artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a part of our everyday lives and how it's developing, along with the opportunities and risks that come with it.”
Visitors will be able to explore AI’s historical links to Bletchley Park, including the work of Alan Turing, Jack Good, and Donald Michie, who contributed to early AI research after their wartime codebreaking efforts. The exhibition will also feature interactive displays, including a challenge to identify AI-generated images, and case studies such as AI’s use in wildlife conservation through satellite image analysis.
Tilly highlighted one example: “The British Antarctic Survey is using AI to analyse satellite images, helping to count and identify species such as penguins from space.”
The exhibition will also address AI’s limitations, including concerns about misinformation, energy consumption, and the impact on jobs. It will conclude with expert insights from figures such as Dame Wendy Hall and Professor David Leslie, discussing AI’s future role in society.
Following the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, discussions on AI governance have continued at global forums, including the G7, UN, and G20. The next AI Action Summit is scheduled for Paris in February 2025.
Bletchley Park Trust has received support from the UK Government for the exhibition, announced after the AI Safety Summit.
