This Bonfire night, residents in Bedforshire are being urged to remember to use fireworks responsibly.

Nearly 2000 people had to receive urgent care across England in 2018 because of firework-related injuries.

The Indian festival Diwali and the Chinese New Year celebrations also involve the use of these crackers. Councillor Ian Dalgarno is the Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council.

He spoke to us about the rules and guidelines people must follow while using them:

"You can set fireworks off during Bonfire night between 7 am and midnight and for Diwali and Chinese New Year between 7 am and 1 am.

"If you're going to have a firework display at home, buy them from a licensed store. This way you know that it is CE marked and they can give you proper advice about how to use them safely".

For retailers who operate without a license, he says,

"Central Bedfordshire Council, our trading standards officers and the fire service will be visiting every retailer, checking their licenses and whether they are storing firecrackers in the right fashion.

"Those without a license or caught selling them to under-18s will be liable for criminal prosecution.

"If you're celebrating at home, whoever is using the fireworks, please don't drink. Fireworks and alcohol do not mix. Don't let children use firecrackers unattended and always supervise them.

"Do not give anybody under the age of 5 any cracker, not even a sparkler because they will not understand the safety risks involved."

He also recommends the use of tapers and lighting the fireworks from a safe distance.

The loud noise from these crackers may also distress animals. Councillor Dalgarno says, "Remember your pets. They get scared of loud bangs so get them indoors. Warn your neighbours as well that you're going to be bursting firecrackers so they can put their pets indoor as well."
